When I was very young and living in Shrewsbury the main railway line from Shrewsbury to Crewe ran at the foot of our garden.
This early introduction to steam engines meant that I soon became a train spotter complete with the essential Ian Allan book containing all the engine numbers that would be dutifully underlined once an engine had been spotted.
You never forget these experiences as you move on in life and I still visit all the heritage railways that we come across. The Icknield Line at Chinnor where the above photo was taken is nearest to where we live now
