Abbots Langley village lies between Watford and Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. The area was given to the Abbot and monks of St Albans during the reign of Edward the Confessor, hence 'Abbots Langley'. The photographs were taken in March/April 2011.

A pretty and historic Hertfordshire village at the foot of the Chilterns near the Ashridge National Trust wooded estate, it is frequently used as a film/TV location. The photographs were taken in 2009 unless otherwise stated.

Amersham is split into two: the Old Town is an historic market town dating back to at least AD 796; Amersham-on-the-Hill was developed when the Metropolitan Railway reached the town in 1892

Ashridge Estate is a 5,000 acres area of the Chilterns Hills north of Berkhamsted that has been managed by the National Trust since 1926. The estate has beech and oak woodlands, commons and chalk downlands; right in the centre is Ashridge House.
The House was a former priory founded in 1283. Spared from the Dissolution, Henry VIII bequeathed the estate to his daughter Elizabeth, who lived here as a young girl for eight years. After her death in 1603 Thomas Egerton bought the estate and his son, John Egerton, was created the 1st Earl of Bridgewater in 1617.
In 1808 the family's successful canal-building enterprises led the 7th Earl to commission James Wyatt to rebuild and extend Ashridge in the fashionable Gothic Revival style. Humphry Repton laid out the gardens. In 1853 the estate passed to Lord Brownlow, who extended it. The death of the 3rd Earl Brownlow, a Conservative politician, in 1921 caused its break up and sale. In 1929 it became the Bonar Law College operating as an educational trust. In World War II Ashridge became a wing of the Charing Cross Road Hospital and treated 500 wounded after the evacuation of Dunkirk. In 2014 the House was home to Ashridge Business School, founded in 1959.

ASKETT is a small village within the Green Belt and the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lying in the shadow of Whiteleaf Hill adjacent to Monks Risborough. A large part of the village was designated as a Conservation Area in 1977; there are 14 Grade II listed buildings in this area. The village has a vibrant and active community. CADSDEN is a hamlet south east of Askett. Dwellings are located along Cadsden Hill, a steep valley on the Chilterns escarpment. The area includes Grangelands and Pulpit Hill Nature Reserves. Chequers is close by and the pub is used by Prime Ministers to host world leaders. The main road through WHITELEAF near Monks Risborough follows the line of the Upper Icknield Way. It is the location of Whiteleaf Golf Club and Monks Risborough Cricket Club, which has a significant slope. The photographs were taken by Alan Strawn in 2016. Click here to see location on a map

A Chiltern escarpment village of about 3,000 people, Aston Clinton is some five miles south east of Aylesbury. It is bisected by the Wendover and Aylesbury arms of the Grand Union Canal. The major linking feature of the escarpment villages is the Icknield Way, “the oldest road in Britain” and a main cross-country route from pre-Roman times extending from Wells-next-the-Sea on the Norfolk coast to the source of the River Kennet in Wiltshire. The photographs were taken by David Lonsdale between August 2007 and April 2008 and by Alison Beck, mostly in 2014.

Right on the extremity of the Chilterns, five miles north of Luton, is Barton-le-Clay, a long-established village in Central Bedfordshire with a population of around 5,000. To the south-east are the Barton Hills, now a National Nature Reserve and the Sharpenhoe Clappers, site of an iron-age hill fort, which form the north-east border of the Chilterns Hills.
The old monochrome photographs have been taken from a book, Everlasting Spring, by Audrey O’Dell published in 1985; copyright owners are unknown. The colour photographs were taken in 2013.

The Old Town remains a showcase for Chiltern vernacular buildings and Georgian elegance as houses, inns and shops were gentrified during the town's heyday as a coaching stop on the road from London to Oxford. Photographs by John Harrison in autumn 2007.

BERKHAMSTED lies in a river valley on the Roman Akeman Street and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. It has the remains of a castle, a school founded in 1544 that Graham Greene attended and a canal. Captions include the year the photograph was taken.
The little parish of NORTHCHURCH, north west of Berkhamsted, has a lot to offer visitors. Its church is one of the oldest in Hertfordshire. The Northchurch photos were taken by John Hockey in 2017.

The ruined church of St James is on a minor road north of Bix village at map reference SU 726 870. St James ceased as a church in 1874 when the outside walls started to bow, making the building unsafe. The photographs were taken in May 2006.

The village, 4 miles southwest of Hemel Hempstead, is medieval in origin. It has expanded since 1940 and has a large commuter population. Near the village is a disused former WWII airfield on which now stands The Mount prison. Most of the photographs were taken by Edna Sansom in 2011.

Breachwood Green lies in rural farming land, quite close to the outskirts of Luton. Yet, except for the planes flying over to land at Luton Airport, it could be many miles from any metropolis.
Whitwell, just to the east, is in the parish of St Paul's Walden. Legend has it that the earliest inhabitants were gypsies who settled in the valley of the River Mimram. Historical documents trace the origin of the parish back to at least King Alfred's time (the late 9th century), and the name Whitwell is of Saxon origin.
