Cumberland House on Common Road was built in 1745 by Prince William Augustus, the youngest son of George II, for use as a hunting lodge. He became Duke of Cumberland, who controversially suppressed the Jacobite Rebellion at Culloden, which earned him the nickname 'Butcher Cumberland'. Two large brick-built wings were added in the 1930s.
