Butts Meadow was a practice ground for medieval archers when the sport was compulsory. The site of the original butts could still be found until 1932 when the meadow was levelled as a playing field. Part of it is occupied by allotments. The Meadow only survived as open space through the action of Mrs Lionel Lucas of Kingshill who purchased it in 1886 and donated it to the town. Apartment blocks in Chesham Road are in the background. (2006)
