From Lilley to Streatley

Leaving a small Hertfordshire village, we cross a county border and meet the urban area of Luton, filling the gap in the Chilterns created by the river Lea. Climbing Warden Hill we have extensive views all around before dropping down into the small Bedfordshire village of Streatley, where a pub awaits.

From Streatley to Barton-le-Clay

This section of the North Chiltern Trail affords spectacular views from near Streatley all the way along the ridge that ends in Sharpenhoe Clappers. There are dramatic combes, splendid wild flowers in season and a poignant reminder of the 1914 – 1918 war at the highest point. Add the remains of a medieval moated manor and a converted water mill and you have a walk of some 5 miles that is both enjoyable and rewarding.

From Barton-le-Clay to Pegsdon

Leaving the much enlarged village of Barton-le-Clay, our Trail climbs through the magnificent Barton Hills before joining the ancient Icknield Way. In the footsteps of our ancestors we are taken over Telegraph Hill from where we descend to Pegsdon through its glorious Nature Reserve with wide-ranging views.

From Pegsdon to Great Offley

This section of the Trail is wonderfully varied and usually quiet, starting up steep hills and combes with extensive views, discovering ancient tracks, then flatter undulating arable land, before ending at Great Offley with its church and pubs. The first stretch up over the hills and on to the Icknield Way is our photographer’s favourite. For colour you will find bluebells in April, poppies in June, flowers all summer and muted shades in autumn.

From Great Offley to Preston

Descending from a hilltop village to the foot of the slopes, with views eastwards, we follow bridleways, then climb a secret combe. Through the flatter fields above, we pass carpets of bluebells in spring, and may see groups of Fallow deer. Arriving in Preston we may be tempted to visit the community owned pub, due to its reputation for fine ales and food.

From Preston to Whitwell

From Preston we descend the eastern slope of the Chilterns before turning south past woodlands famed for bluebells. The hamlet of St Paul’s Walden, with its royal connections, pub and parkland, entertains us before we descend into the Mimram valley and arrive in the village of Whitwell.

From Whitwell to Peter's Green

Climbing up out of Whitwell, we follow bridleways, and look back over the Mimram valley. Paths through quiet undulating arable landscape give us reason to pause. They lead us to Peter’s Green and its pub.

From Peter's Green to Breachwood and Lilley

We walk through rolling countryside and can look west to the hangars and planes at Luton airport. After skirting the eastern border of Luton we descend back into peaceful countryside, dropping down into Lilley Bottom, before climbing again to pass under the A505 and into the village of Lilley.
