The Hughenden Stream is one of the Chiltern chalk streams, a globally rare wildlife habitat. Water emerges from the chalk as springs to feed the stream. In summer little rain percolates into the chalk and the head of the river moves down its valley. But in winter, if rainfall is heavy, the river starts flowing higher up. The Hughenden Stream starts near where the minor road from Naphill joins the A4128 at a roundabout. It is a fickle stream in its upper reaches and in some locations we only have pictures of the dry riverbed. This is visible on the west of the A4128: it crosses fields to the south and our photographs then show the Stream flowing from Church Farm, through Hughenden Park to High Wycombe where it joins the River Wye. Ordnance Survey grid references are quoted. All the photographs were taken in April 2004.

The river can rise, in a wet year, not far below Dudswell, about two miles north-west of Berkhamsted. But in past years, before the Three Valleys Water extraction point at New Ground was installed, it would have risen above Dudswell. The river is a typical chalk stream rising from springs dependent on the groundwater level in the chalk strata. Years ago it would have carried a good volume of water, sufficient at least to power two watermills in Berkhamsted, and another further downstream near Bourne End (two miles west of Hemel Hempstead).

Further competition for water is provided by the Grand Union Canal constructed in the early 19th century. This is primarily fed from reservoirs above Tring, but in a dry year additional water is pumped into the canal from the groundwater along its route, which has an immediate effect on the groundwater level supplying the river.

The river runs close to the canal throughout its length, mostly at a lower level. It suffers a loss of identity where it is diverted into the canal for about 200 yards in Berkhamsted before it exits at Bank Mill. It thereafter maintains some semblance of a river until it arrives at Winkwell not far below Bourne End. After a mile it emerges again as a river for about half a mile before joining the River Gade at Two Waters, Hemel Hempstead.

There are no fish in the river, but it serves as a useful feeding ground for ducks when there are no visitors to throw them bread.

Unless otherwise stated the photographs were taken in 1994. They follow the river from its source to Winkwell.

The River Chess emerges from chalk above Chesham and flows in a lovely Chiltern valley to join the Colne at Rickmansworth. These photographs were taken between 2001 and 2007 for the Chilterns Conservation Board and by Terry Cherrill and Edna Sansom.

The River Gade rises between Dagnall and Great Gaddesden; it flows through Hemel Hempstead and joins the Bulbourne at Two Waters. South of here it continues to Rickmansworth where it joins the Colne. The photographs were taken in 2010 and 2011.

The Misbourne is one of the Chiltern chalk streams, a globally rare wildlife habitat. Water emerges from the chalk as springs to feed the stream. In summer little rain percolates into the chalk and the head of the river moves down its valley. But in winter, if rainfall is heavy, the river starts flowing higher up.

Prior to a river rescue scheme in 1997, water companies were taking increasing amounts of groundwater so that in drought years the Misbourne virtually dried up. Since then pumping stations along the valley take less water and the river flow has recovered.

Our photographs follow the course of the River Misbourne from a pond north of Great Missenden, through the Missendens, the Chalfonts, Amersham and Denham, to where it joins the River Colne near the start of the M40 motorway. It is a fickle stream in its upper reaches and in some locations we only have pictures of the dry riverbed.
