Many years ago I used to enjoy cross country running. My regular running partner and I both liked to try new routes in areas we didn’t know. That’s how I discovered Stonor House. We’d planned our route, so we knew the estate was there, but when we emerged from the woods and ran down though the deer park with the house below us I knew I’d have to come back and take more time to appreciate it. I’ve returned on several occasions since, usually sharing my enthusiasm with friends or family, and for the Chiltern Society’s guidebook 50 Great Walks in the Chilterns I designed a walk that passes through the park. For me, the house and the landscape complement each other perfectly. There’s also the added bonus of the deer herd!
