The Clayfield Copse reserve has two areas of woodland, Clayfield Copse itself and Blackhouse Wood, joined at a corner of each. Clayfield Copse, in Berkshire, is often wet and muddy, as the name might suggest, where early purple orchids flourish and hazels are coppiced. Blackhouse Wood, in Oxfordshire, is somewhat different, mixed deciduous woodland where bluebells, greater stitchwort and wood anemones grow in springtime and fungi abound during the autumn. The reserve also encompasses more open areas, used mainly for recreation and by dog walkers. August 1991*
