The clay-topped Chiltern hills are ideal for oak trees, as here on Studham Common. I am in constant awe that nature produces organisms that can survive in all weathers for centuries and provide a useful home for many invertebrates. The sun on these acorns almost seemed to make them smile!

Some years ago, an aunt of mine who lived on the beautiful Isles of Scilly came to stay and naturally we took her around our local area. In her Cornish lilt she said ‘Don’t you ever move from ‘ere. You’ve got everythin’ – the Downs, Ashridge, canals, lovely walks, mills and the like – you don’t go movin’ from ‘ere.’ And we haven’t, other than dotting from village to village, so even though she lived in ‘paradise’ I think she had a point.
