There are often tales of big beasts being seen in the Chilterns but they don’t come any bigger than the chalk lion on Dunstable Downs. Designed by R B Brooke-Greaves in 1933 to celebrate the opening of Whipsnade Zoo, the new country home of London Zoo providing extensive wild areas for animals. It can be seen for miles around and is a real reminder you are getting near home.
