I wrote an article for Chiltern News on the medieval tilers of Penn in Buckinghamshire who fascinated me. They had the clay, the wood to fire the kilns, the river for transport and the designers. Such was the success of the industry that the whole of southern England used their products. I love the impish face on this fragment in Holy Trinity church, Penn.
