I enjoy the birds at College Lake too, like this lapwing. I remember being told as a girl that they were called peewits, and being surprised when I bought my first bird book to find that there was no such thing. This particular bird sports three English names as well as its Latin one – green plover, lapwing and peewit, although the latter is less often heard these days.
