St Mary's is one of the finest Norman churches in Hertfordshire. Its Grade I listing denotes it as a building of exceptional interest. Construction commenced in 1140 and was completed 40 years later. The 14th century octagonal spire is one of the tallest in Europe at 61 metres high. The tower has a ring of eight bells dating from 1590 to 1767.
