An information board at the Black Horse in Frogmore Street states that a pub has been on the site since the 1850s. In 1851 the census lists a beer and lodging house keeper, his wife, a victualler, two servants and 22 lodgers. Even if it was a big building, it must have been crowded. Forty years later the pub was named 'The Old Black Horse'. In those days several pubs occupied the street, but increased pressure on the breweries to improve their premises caused many to close. The original building was pulled down and rebuilt by the Chesham Brewery Co, possibly to a design by William Huckvale.
