The Art Deco Town Hall dates from 1936 after the citizens of Luton burned the previous one to the ground in a riot on 19th July 1919. Many ex-servicemen and sympathisers were angry about unemployment and when they were refused permission to celebrate the ending of the war in a local park they set light to the Town Hall. The present building is clad in Portland stone and built of seven million bricks.
