Next to Blackhouse Wood two fields were under cultivation until the 1990s before being abandoned and left to nature. Ten years later over 70 wild flowers had germinated among the hundreds of colonising ash saplings. After a further ten years, the ash, now joined by oak, has started to mature and at least four species of orchid have colonised one of the fields, including bee and fragrant orchids. This photo is of the floral display seen in one of the fields five years ago. The edge of Blackhouse Wood can just be seen at the back. August 2011
