Before the advent of modern welding technology, the blacksmith's anvil was the primary tool of metal workers. Heavy-duty anvils are usually made from forged steel with a smooth, hardened steel face plate to give the right degree of rebound when striking forged steel with a hammer. The horns, or beaks, aid the hammering of curved pieces.
