The church of St Mary’s, Eaton Bray weathers none too well on the outside but the hard chalky limestone or clunch provides the perfect material for the carver’s art. The noted architectural historian Alec Clifton-Taylor warns against carving that is ‘a little too reminiscent of the parsley bed’ but here it is beautifully restrained.
