Long before 2005 the pond of earlier years was contained by building up the surrounding area and installing a sluice to control any overflow from the nearby river Misbourne. The area is now landscaped and provides a pleasant place to rest and watch the world go by.

Pictured by a Rickmansworth photographer around 1910, a horse-drawn cart is in the shallow water where the horse can take a refreshing drink whilst cooling his hooves. The writer of the postcard referred to Chalfont St Giles as a real country place, but complained that he had to go miles for his shopping.
