The river Misbourne flows under the High Street and in the adjoining meadow behind the village pond it is bridged by this enormous sarcens stone which was discovered under the road bridge and was possibly part of a Roman road. The river is small now but in past centuries there was sufficient water to power six watermills in the eight miles before it reached the village.
