We now look inside Lacey Green windmill.

The cap, at the top of the mill, rotates so that the sails are always facing the wind. The wind shaft, shown here, protrudes from the cap just outside the doors in the centre of the photograph; the main sails are attached to it. Inside the cap we see the brake wheel and the spokes radiating from the wind shaft. The brake shoe is at the top of the wheel. The teeth on the brake wheel engage with teeth on another wheel to carry the drive down the mill.
