In 2013 a thriving street market took place in the High Street on Wednesdays. It echoes the time when Burnham was granted a royal charter to hold a market and an annual fair. This prized status was lost when its competitive neighbour, Maidenhead, opened its first road bridge across the River Thames in 1777. This reversal heralded several centuries of relative decay for the village.
