The tablet commemorates St Botolph, who was born around 620AD of noble Anglo-Saxon birth. As a member of the St Benedictine order he became one of the most influential missionaries of the 7th century. Over 70 churches and five towns are dedicated to him. He founded a monastery in 654 in Ikenhoe, now Iken, in Suffolk and died in 680.
