The well is 368 feet deep and 4 feet wide. A 23-feet high superstructure houses the winding mechanism, lifting only two counterbalanced 9-gallon buckets at a time. It was built by R J & H Wilder of Wallingford. The golden elephant was added some years later and forms part of the primary school's logo.
