Sarratt's water pump and individual wells provided the village's water supply. Mains water was laid on in the 1890s but was resisted by many people who preferred to get free water - and local news - at the pump. It ceased to be used in the 1930s but when it was covered the old step, worn down by generations of villagers standing there to fill their pails, was left.To children from nearby Croxley, Sarratt was famous for its treacle mines. This was probably a reference to the village pump which was thought of as much more symbolic of the village than the wheatsheaf on the nameboard.
