HS2 Landscape mitigation – foreground trees planted a couple of years ago, mostly in poor condition. The triangular area beyond is ‘Translocated ancient woodland’ – planting on soil taken from part of Jones Hill Wood (just beyond) when it was felled. (aka ‘The Somme’ by local residents). Bowood Lane bridge works to the left, & Wendover Dean viaduct to the right of the wood.

Of course in recent years we are learning to mitigate the huge works we do in the landscape. It is a good thing too. In modern times we move faster than natural processes. So the world would be a poorer place if we did not try to at least make the place tidy after we change things. I think you can see though, that the new 'environment' after mitigation is vastly different and the ecology is ruined. That will take centuries to recover. Photos like this are an important piece of work so we can record what we are doing to our planet.
