I did go independently on other advertised Chiltern walks but was not very keen on their tendency to ‘yomp’ through the countryside with very little time to pause or take pictures! I preferred those led by enthusiastic specialists, like Brian Bowman, who showed us old strip fields, a moated farm, a nunnery fishpond and these “warrens” on a walk near Great Kimble. The warrens were built to persuade recently introduced rabbits to breed there around the 13th century. It was felt they needed encouragement . . .
