A weather-worn plaque on a gateway wall records the 400 years of residency of generations of the Micklem family during which they acted as benefactors and church trustees in the parishes of Hurley and nearby Bisham. It was placed here by Brigadier Ralph Micklem (1884-1977) in 1969. "I love the sense of continuity that this evokes," adds the author.
