St Peter and St Paul, Little Gaddesden. This church is full of fascinating memorials, and there is an excellent guidebook giving details of the stories behind many of them. One to be much admired is a Bridgewater tomb dedicated to John and Elizabeth, who both succumbed to smallpox in the prime of life. Elizabeth's list of virtues and qualities is amazing: 'She was a lady of exquisite fineness, both of mind and body, agreeably tall, of a delicate shape, a beautiful meen (sic) and of a most obliging carriage.' It goes on for a great many more lines.
