Cranstone's Bridge is a graceful Grade II listed cast iron bridge over the River Gade. Popularly known as the White Bridge, it was constructed around 1840 for Sir Astley Paston Cooper by local iron founder Joseph Cranstone to give better access to Gadebridge House (demolished in 1963). Sir Astley was a surgeon who was knighted after successfully removing a tumour from the head of George IV. The Gade is an internationally important chalk stream, where wild watercress still grows.
