The answer [to the previous picture] is provided by a plaque at ground level commemorating the opening of a branch of Burton's The Tailors here in 1938. Sir Montague Burton arrived in Leeds as a Lithuanian refugee immigrant in 1900. He ended up running the world's largest clothing factory, employing 10,000 workers and turning out 30,000 suits a week. After World War II the firm supplied 'demob' suits to the government for returning servicemen. By 1952 the firm had 600 shops, but ceased trading in 1981.
